State Rep.-elect Todd Courser is still on a religious crusade to ensure that the gay community does not enjoy the same anti-discrimination protections as the rest of us.
The Lapeer Republican recently called for the ouster of House Speaker Jase Bolger (with nine working days left until the speaker leaves office) because of his support for a revision to the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act that would protect the LGB (but not the T) community.
Courser, a tea party favorite, is now doubling down, saying that he and two other GOP representatives-elect are fighting the good fight against evil within the Republican Party on a "spiritual battlefield."
Among these three who supposedly represent a "voice of hope for our republic" is Rep.-elect Gary Glenn, a Midland area Republican. Glenn is a notorious gay basher who two years ago insisted that homosexuals "experience dramatically higher risks of domestic violence, mental illness, life-threatening disease, substance abuse, and premature death."
Glenn, who was the longtime leader of the far-right group American Family Association of Michigan, also claimed that the 2009 Hate Crimes Prevention Act would “criminalize the Bible and use the threat of federal prosecutions and long jail sentences to silence Christians.”
In his latest message to his supporters, Courser wrote: "We, as Republican elected officials cannot allow leaders, who exist by the power they derived from our districts, to promote evil, without standing up and forcing the issues into the public -- if we do then we ourselves are complicit in this unholy alliance."
Courser also belittled his fellow conservative Republicans:
"The Republican leadership has gone left and liberal on this, and many, issues. It has created a stark-contrast moment to see who will stand against this. Many said during their campaigns that they were ready for the struggle and sucked up all the media they could get to say how committed they were to being strong voices for Christian values and morality, but now that it matters, the campaign talk is over and the elections have been won, they will not stand up in any way.
"...They say, 'Todd, you don't understand, everyone already knows where I stand. I said it in the campaign and I don't need to repeat myself or stick my neck out to defend it, because I am pro-traditional family values and when I run again I will be sure to tell them all over again that I stand for traditional values!' Wellllll, here is the moment when their campaign commitment matters most, where the rubber meets the road, and this is the time to make good on the claim that they are the Conservative champion all those flyers said they were.
Courser also chooses to ignore the companion bill introduced by Bolger that directly puts the religious views of a shop owner above the public accommodations liberties of the gay community.
"Right now, it is the Republican, not the Democrat, leadership who is moving to grant protected class status to the LGBT community and in so doing destroy freedoms of religion and speech for our children and their children. We cannot stand silently as this happens as it is the very principle that founded this great nation."
The Pow Wow is coming!
Courser and the third member of this wannabe triumvirate, Rep.-elect Cindy Gamrat, are practically shouting from the rooftops that the tea party PowWow is coming in January and the deadline for advanced tickets is today.
This is the event held at the Soaring Eagle Casino in Mount Pleasant that last year did not sit too well with the central Michigan Native American tribes because of the name of the gathering.
"This is the biggest event for the conservative cause in Michigan: 400 of the top conservative activists in Michigan will attend," Courser said. "... At this premier statewide event we will be taking proactive steps in setting the 2015 legislative agenda as well as setting the stage for the 2016 elections!

Do they wear white bedsheets when they gather in Mt. Plezzy? I can't believe the tribal casino lets them rent the venue under the powwow name but takes offense to CMU having an Indian chief as its mascot.
