In a Senate campaign where both candidates, with a lot of
help from billionaire PAC money, have demonized each other, it’s a bit
refreshing to see Democratic Rep. Gary Peters engage in a light-hearted,
positive TV ad about his “frugal” approach to the federal budget and the family
budget.
The 30-second spot that debuts today features Peters’ wife
and daughter complaining about the congressman’s miserly ways -- delaying the purchase of a new washing machine and refusing to replace a worn-out pair of shoes.
One reference to Adlai Stevenson, the 1952 and 1956 Dem presidential nominee, is unmistakable. Peters, with his feet up on his desk, displays a hole in the sole of one shoe. That will mean
nothing to the uner-60 crowd, but it may score a few points with seniors.
The Peters camp claims this is the
candidate’s fifth positive TV ad of the campaign while they accuse Republican
opponent Terri Lynn Land of relying on negative ads by a 2-1 margin.
On Friday, the Land campaign
unveiled a new TV spot that highlights her “Michigan First” agenda, which
focuses on trade deals that are “free and fair” and on securing the nation’s
borders against illegal immigration.
