Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel held a high-level
press conference on Wednesday to announce the appointment of a new county Animal
Shelter director and a new pet-friendly approach toward animal adoptions.
This was your
classic dog-and-pony show, minus the ponies.
The event
featured animal control officers from across the county, representatives of
various rescue leagues and animal rights organizations, and several cats and
dogs that are available for adoption.
Hackel introduced
a new county logo that’s message is a variation on his PR mantra: Make Macomb
Your Home – for your cats and dogs. That new logo was displayed prominently on
huge display boards and on dog bandanas handed out for free to attendees.
The crowd got a
laugh out of the dogs who barked in unison with the applause when the executive
pledged to establish a new era at the Animal Shelter.
The former
sheriff sheepishly added that he has learned something since becoming Macomb’s first
executive:
“Sorry guys, but
I’ve found that women care more about their kids and their dogs than their
husbands.”
