Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel
has repeatedly emphasized his warm, bipartisan relationship with Gov. Rick
Snyder, it appears the Democratic executive is mulling the idea of trying to
oust the Republican governor in 2014.
Hackel first considered a
future gubernatorial run in 2008 but since his 2010 election as county executive, many
political observers assumed he would serve as executive (a job he could
probably keep for life) for a while before turning his sights to Lansing.
But CBS Detroit radio (WWJ-AM 950)
recently reported that Hackel has not ruled out a ’14 run – if he can attract enough
support. The former sheriff also suggests that, if he does form a candidacy, it
would be because the public is calling for him to run.
“If there were people from the business sector
or others that said, ‘You know what, we think you can make a go of this, we’d
really like to help make this happen,’ then I might be intrigued or interested
in seeing what can we build, what can we do,” Hackel told WWJ’s Roberta Jasina.
He added: “I hear about it, people
say, ‘You have a good possibility of running for governor some day.’ I
hear it.”
Hackel went on to say that his
ability to win a Democratic primary would be hampered by his politically
moderate, bipartisan approach. Party apparatchiks may not gravitate toward
someone who is not “drinking the Kool-Aid.”
