State Rep. Lesia Liss, who is fighting for her political
survival in the August Democratic primary, has produced a video that is getting
panned online.
The Liss video is an attempt to refute charges made against
her in campaign materials by Rep. Jon Switalski, the fellow Warren Democrat who
was tossed into Liss’ south Warren
district by the redistricting process.
Sitting at a kitchen table, Liss slowly cuts a roll of
bologna as she dismisses Switalski’s claims as distortions and mistruths. Each
issue is covered by an off-camera narrator who tosses her a softball question
such as “… that’s not true, is it?”
The tag line: “That’s just bologna.”
Liss’ husband, Mark, also a fixture in Warren politics, is sending out emails
promoting his wife’s “tongue-in-cheek” video. He seems proud that Lesia has
decided it’s “time to lighten things up.”
But on Facebook, the short film _ it runs about 2 minutes
and 20 seconds -- has produced a harshly negative reaction. The two main
complaints: The scene looks like it was
shot with a 1990s-era video camera. And the audio production of Liss’ voice and
the narrator’s voice (apparently recorded separately in a studio) don’t match
up.
A few critics on FB were almost speechles: “Jesus,” “OMG”
and “worst ever.”
Others chose biting satire to express their reaction: “I
love political ads with strong production values!” “this
woman can't even handle a kitchen knife,” “sometimes you’ve got to just ham it
up” and “that speaking voice … confident, unwavering, riveting, inspiring.”
So far, the ad has attracted about
700 hits on YouTube. Interestingly, the comment section has been disabled.
