According to new U.S. Census estimates for 2014, Macomb Township again led the state in growth with a gain of 1,828 people, lifting the central Macomb County community to a population of 84,459. Macomb Township, with more than a dozen subdivisions currently under construction, has earned the “fastest-growing” distinction in Michigan numerous times over the past 20 years.
Neighboring Clinton Township, another locale that borders
M-59, passed up Flint in the new numbers and now ranks as the seventh most
populous community in the state with 99,084 people.
Warren (135,099) and Sterling Heights (131,741) both grew
modestly last year and maintained their positions as Michigan’s third- and
fourth-largest cities, respectively.
Michigan's population grew
for the third straight year in 2014 despite the continued decline of its
largest city. Detroit lost more than 6,000 people last year, dipping to
680,250.
The figures released on Thursday indicate where people
are moving to and from but they also reflect births and deaths.
Other Macomb County municipalities in the Top 25 are
Shelby Township at 16th and one of the first large suburban Detroit
communities, St. Clair Shores, which is holding on to the 24th spot.
