A number of political heavyweights will be in Michigan this month to try to sway voters in the state’s hotly contested races for governor and U.S. Senate.
U.S. Rep. Gary Peters, a Bloomfield Township Democrat, and Republican Terri Lynn Land, a former secretary of state, seek the office being vacated by retiring U.S. Sen. Carl Levin.
Democrat Mark Schauer, a former congressman, wants to derail Republican Gov. Rick Snyder’s plans for a second four-year term.
First lady Michelle Obama will be in Detroit Friday to campaign on behalf of Peters and Schauer.
She’ll be at the Detroit Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts at 350 Madison St. in Detroit.
Tickets for the free event became available at 10 a.m. Wednesday on a first-come, first-served basis at:

Not be outdone, national-stature Republicans are also coming to Michigan to campaign for Snyder, Land and other statewide Republicans.

The former Florida governor will be in Michigan Monday, Oct. 13, with stops planned for 10:30 a.m. in Grand Rapids, 2:20 p.m. in Lansing, and 4 p.m. in Troy.
The event in Troy will be at the American Polish Cultural Center, 2975 E. Maple Road.
The events are open to the public, but they have to register at http://jebbushmi.eventbrite. com in order to attend.

The Kentucky senator will be at the 125th Oakland County Lincoln Day Dinner Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the Royal Park Hotel, 500 E. University Drive in Rochester.
There’s a VIP reception at 5 p.m., a 400 Club reception at 6 p.m. and the main dinner at 6:45 p.m.
Individual tickets cost $75.
