It was a matter of time: Soldiers tweet from the battlefield

Kudos to Politico for discovering a fascinating (and potentially controversial) development in modern warfare witnessed today – Israeli soldiers live-blogging and live-tweeting while engaged in their attack on the Gaza Strip.
According to Dylan Byers, the Politico media critic, the social media communications are complete with details about military strikes, photos, YouTube videos, and warnings issued to the enemy.

One particularly compelling online video shows an aerial view of a strike on the head of Hamas’ military wing that leaves his car in flames.

Coverage of the operation, which the Israeli Defense Forces call "Operation Pillar of Defense," is being led by @IDFSpokesperson and is a response to recent rocket attacks from Gaza. He started tweeting about the attacks shortly before noon ET and here are some samples:

The IDF has embarked on an operation against Hamas, an Iranian proxy responsible for terror attacks on Israel. #Iran #Gaza

We recommend that no Hamas operatives, whether low level or senior leaders, show their faces above ground in the days ahead.

Initial reports indicate that the Iron Dome has intercepted a number of rockets above a major Israeli city. #Gaza #PillarOfDefense
