Man-on-the-street interviews designed to demonstrate the
ignorance of the public on basic subjects have become a staple of late-night TV
talk shows, but the crew at Jimmy Kimmel Live has taken things to a whole new
level by exposing just how dumb some voters are.
Kimmel’s crew took their cameras to
the streets Tuesday afternoon in Los Angeles, conducting a little poll on the outcome of the
second presidential debate -- four hours before the debate in Hempstead, N.Y., began.
This “experiment” was a complete
comic success, with people winging it rather than admitting that they are
paying so little attention that they didn’t know there was no debate on Monday
night.
The show’s producers asked people on
Hollywood Boulevard which candidate fared better and, comically, people
responded in a way to make them sound knowledgeable.
“Who do you think won last night’s
debate?” the interviewer asked.
“I’m gonna go with Obama,” said one
respondent. “He was stronger this time around, in his choice of answering
questions. The best part for me was -- I think there was booing -- wasn’t there
booing on uh … was it Mitt Romney?”
Another man said he was glad to see
that the president was “more alert this time.”
“Did you watch the whole thing?” he
was asked.
“Oh yeah, oh yeah!”
One respondent who said he watched most
of the debate was asked what the highlights were. “There were so many, I can’t
tell you.”
Kimmel was so pleased with this
display of BS artistry that he followed up on Wednesday with interviewers asking people who won the “First Ladies Debate.” Unbelievably, Kimmel’s TV
crew had little trouble finding people who pontificated about a debate event
that, of course, has never happened in political history.
A woman said she thought Ann Romney
won the debate because she was so “classy.”
Another voter, ironically, said Michelle Obama was the victor because
she was more accurate with her statements.
One man was especially embarrassed by
his answers because he was sitting in the audience attending the Kimmel show
as the video was shown. Amidst raucous laughter from the crowd, he smiled and
told Kimmel: “I think I had a dream last night; I saw the debate in the dream.”
With a wry smile, Kimmel offered
this conclusion: “God Bless America.”
I think a more appropriate response
would be: Heaven Help Us.
