Political strategists might assume former president Bill Clinton is out beating the bushes for Barack Obama these days, particularly in eastern Ohio, but Clinton has apparently found time to study Proposal 3 on Michigan's ballot and give it his endorsement.
Earlier this month, the proposal was endorsed by former governor William Milliken.
Proposal 3, for those having trouble keeping track, is the proposed constitutional amendment that would require 25 percent of Michigan's electric power come from green-energy sources by 2025.
“Proposal 3
is Michigan’s best opportunity this year to jump-start
the state’s economy by creating 94,000 jobs and increasing the use of renewable
energy,” Clinton said in a press release. “Proposal 3 invests in Michigan’s future so that
it won’t get left behind by the 30 other states that are already creating new
clean-energy jobs and lowering consumers’ electricity costs. That’s why I’m so
proud to endorse Proposal 3.”
Proposal 3's definition of renewable energy includes wind, solar, biomass and
hydropower by 2025. While the number of jobs it would create is in dispute, a study by Michigan State University determined it
could create at least 74,000 Michigan jobs. If
Michigan’s "manufacturing talent and know-how" are factored in, proponents say 94,000 Michigan
jobs will be created.
“We are extremely proud
President Clinton has endorsed Proposal 3 because it will create 94,000
Michigan jobs, rein in skyrocketing energy costs and reduce dangerous pollution
that threatens our Great Lakes and our public health,” said Mark Fisk,
spokesman for Michigan Energy Michigan Jobs, the campaign supporting
Proposal 3. “During his hugely successful presidency and now with the Clinton
Global Initiative, President Clinton knows first-hand how clean, renewable
energy can create jobs, reduce energy costs and move the economy forward.”
