As President Obama and Mitt
Romney battle over Romney’s tenure as a leveraged buyout specialist at Bain Capital, a
new report shows that some of some of Romney's old colleagues -- employees of
Bain Capital and Bain & Company -- have donated more than $152,000 to
Obama's campaign and the joint fundraising operation he runs with the Democratic
National Committee. The analysis by Opensecrets.org accounts for those donors
giving $200 or more.
The motivation for those
contributions should generate quite a bit of speculation because they come even
as Obama attacks Bain Capital on a regular basis for laying off workers and
tearing companies apart.
Opensecrets found that Bain employees have given $41,278 to the
president’s campaign, and the watchdog group identified at least three who have
given a total of $96,400 to a joint fundraising committee operated by the Obama
campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
Obama has also collected $16,000 from employees of Bain
& Company, the consulting firm that started Romney's career and helped spawn
Bain Capital.
Of course, it should be noted that, if the dollars do the
talking, the $2.5 million donated by Bain workers to Romney and his super PAC
indicate he’s still a popular guy at the old firm.
